Diesel-powered cars have taken a beating lately with the Volkswagen AG emissions-testing scandal, but Toyota Motor Corp. is taking it one step further saying sales of diesel and gasoline cars, which currently account for about 85% of Toyota global vehicle sales, will be near zero by 2050.
The scandal is forcing Volkswagen to accelerate plans to develop battery-driven electric vehicles. Elsewhere Sweden’s Volvo Car Corp. will build an all-electric car for sale by 2019.
