In 2015, the climate change debate is where the War of Currents was in 1893. With several days of the summit already underway, the climate convention in Paris, COP 21, is shaping up to be the most significant since Kyoto in 1997. It may well do for clean-energy technologies what the Chicago World’s Fair did for electricity. It might be an inflection point.

According to Bill Gates, who has pledged billions of dollars to help fight climate change, “Those who study energy patterns say we are in a gradual transition from oil and coal to natural gas, a fuel that emits far less carbon but still contributes to global warming.” Gates thinks that we simply cannot accept this outcome, and that our best chance to vault over natural gas to a globally applicable, carbon-free source of energy is to drive innovation “at an unnaturally high pace.”

This year the U.S. Green Building Council estimated that 40-48 percent of new, nonresidential construction will be green, equating to a $120-145 billion opportunity.

The chief executives of ExxonMobil Corp. and Royal Dutch Shell PLC have demonstrated contrasting visions for cutting fossil-fuel emissions in a reflection of a divide between American and European oil companies, Sarah Kent and Amy Harder report in the Wall Street Journal. Diesel-powered cars have taken a beating lately with the Volkswagen AG emissions-testing scandal, but Toyota Motor Corp. is taking it one step further saying sales of diesel and gasoline cars, which currently account for about 85% of Toyota global vehicle sales, will be near zero by 2050.

The scandal is forcing Volkswagen to accelerate plans to develop battery-driven electric vehicles. Elsewhere Sweden’s Volvo Car Corp. will build an all-electric car for sale by 2019.

On September 25, 2015, the U.S. and China announced significant steps in battling climate change, including a promise by China to launch a program by 2017 to cap some emissions and put a price on carbon, a first for China, Colleen McCain Nelson and William Mauldin report in the Wall Street Journal. The moves come ahead of efforts to wrap up an international accord in December to reduce global carbon-dioxide emissions.
